| Buying a Pen Q. What pen is right for me?
A. The two most popular digital pens on the market are the Nokia SU-1B and the Logitech IO2 Digital Writing System.
The Nokia pen can be connected to a PC via the supplied USB cradle or to a compatible mobile phone via bluetooth. Note that it is not possible at the moment to connect the Nokia pen with a PC via bluetooth.
Both pens come with software to manage the pen and to download pen strokes to a PC. The Logitech pen additionally has software (MyScript Notes) enabling you to convert the pen strokes stored in the pen to machine readable text on your PC using Intelligent Character Recognition (ICR) This text can then be used in applications such as Outlook or Word.
Note that the MyScript software may be purchased separately for the Nokia at a current cost of £30 from the software supplier and is also bundled for free in the Oxford Digital Paper Kit.
Both the Nokia and Logitech pens require special digital stationery, printed with the Anoto pattern, in order to function correctly. The choice of digital stationery is more or less the same for both types of pen.
In our opinion, the Nokia and Logitech pens both score highly on ease of use, reliability and performance, the question of what pen is right for you is largely down to personal preference and trading off the likely benefit of Bluetooth with the benefits of the ICR capability of the Logitech. |
| Pairing a Pen Q Can I pair my Nokia SU-1B pen to my PC via Bluetooth?
A It is not possible to pair a pen to a PC using Bluetooth.
Q How do I pair my Nokia SU-1B to my mobile phone?
A The supplied Nokia SU-1B users guide gives full instructions on how to pair your pen to your phone and vice versa (refer to Section 1 Getting Started) |
| Compatibility Q Is my mobile phone compatible with the Nokia SU-1B digital pen?
Compatible phones must support the Bluetooth specification 1.1 and the necessary Bluetooth profiles. The necessary profiles are Object Push Profile (OPP), Dial Up Networking (DUN) and the other mandatory Bluetooth profiles. Check with your phone provider for more details on the profiles supported by your phone.
Q Can I use ordinary paper with my digital pen?
A Only paper printed with the Anoto digital pattern can be used to record information to be stored in a pen. You can, of course, use your digital pen as a normal pen using plain paper, but you will not be able to record any pen strokes whilst doing it. |
